Description
Watercolor paintings of my "Seven Grandfather Teachings" series.
The teachings in my culture, Ojibwe culture have been traditionally passed down from generation to generation orally through stories and ceremonies. Historically, this has been done by the elders that carry the stories and traditions. Which I will carry down and teach to my grandchildren. Today, the oral traditions are being shared by those of us who carry the knowledge of such things. The teachings of my culture encompass the morals, values, structures, ceremonial practices, spiritual beliefs of the group. These teachings also ensure the survival of the people. For my people, the Ojibwe people, the teachings vary from nation to nation, because of the geographical placement of each particular group. However, the Ojibwe teachings commonly come from the same root and share a similar message.
Watercolor Painting of Spirit of the Bear by Ayasha Loya
This is the first painting of my collective "Seven Grandfather Teachings" series.
The bear represents 'bravery' (Aakwaodeewin). To face life with courage is to know bravery. I face life with courage and fear only the creator. Bravery is to face life's difficulties with courage. It is to never give up and never give in.
This painting is dear to me because the bear is sacred in my culture. The bear is considered a medicine being with impressive magical powers and plays a major role in many religious ceremonies with or Chippewa tribe. Bears are symbols of strength and wisdom to many Native Americans including the Chippewa. Bears are often associated with healing and medicine. Bears are also one of the most important and widespread clan animals in Native American cultures. The Chippewa Tribe which I am has a Bear Clan (my clan), its totem is called Nooke.
