Description
Watercolor paintings of my "Seven Grandfather Teachings" series.
The teachings in my culture, Ojibwe culture have been traditionally passed down from generation to generation orally through stories and ceremonies. Historically, this has been done by the elders that carry the stories and traditions. Which I will carry down and teach to my grandchildren. Today, the oral traditions are being shared by those of us who carry the knowledge of such things. The teachings of my culture encompass the morals, values, structures, ceremonial practices, spiritual beliefs of the group. These teachings also ensure the survival of the people. For my people, the Ojibwe people, the teachings vary from nation to nation, because of the geographical placement of each particular group. However, the Ojibwe teachings commonly come from the same root and share a similar message.
This is the second watercolor painting of my "Seven Grandfather Teachings" series. The wolf represents humility (Dibaadendiziwin). Humility is to accept yourself as a sacred part of creation. It is to acknowledge that you are equal to others, but not better than others. Humility is to be humble and not arrogant or boastful. This teaching teaches you to take pride in your place within the community and what you do. It is to share your accomplishments with others and find balance within yourself.
