Location: Lac La Croix, Quetico Provincial Park, Ontario. Canada
Notes: This painting is of a small island on Lac La Croix, with a White Pine struggling to grow out of the middle of it. You can see other pines dominating the forest in the background as an Bald Eagle drifts above. White Pine, Pinus strobus is found in the broadleaf and mixed forests of eastern North America. It likes well-drained soil and cool, humid climates, but can also grow in boggy areas and rocky highlands. In mixed forests, this dominant tree towers over all others, including the large broadleaf hardwoods and is the tallest tree in eastern North America. Eastern White Pine forests originally covered much of northeastern North America. Only one percent of the old-growth forests remain after the extensive logging operations of the 18th century to early 20th century. Quetico park still has some old growth forests. Before logging the tree could attain heights of 70 m (230 ft) and live up to 400 years...
